Happy New Year!
I hope you’ve enjoyed a nice holiday season. Now that 2016 is behind us, we can look forward to a productive and eventful 2017.
Since our last newsletter, the most interesting thing to have happened in the Canadian cannabis industry was the recent release of the Task Force on Cannabis Legalization report which outlined their recommendations for the legalization and regulation of recreational cannabis in Canada. If you haven’t seen the complete report, you can view it here.
In this edition of our newsletter, you’ll find an interesting article from our QA Management Team. They provide us with an insider’s look at one of the many ways they help maintain strict quality controls at Delta 9 with regular room inspections. Our friends at Toronto Vaporizer have some useful vaporization tips for you whether you’re a beginner or a novice. We’ll also share a recipe from one of our patients that will help you make the easiest cannabis edibles with very little cannabis and very little time.
As always, we welcome your input. If you have a new product that you’d like us to review/promote or would like to share a recipe of your own, please send in your comments and/or suggestions.
Talk to you in the spring,
Marshall Posner
VP, Sales and Marketing

Canadian Medical Cannabis Council Reacts To Legalization Task Force
Ottawa, ON – Philippe Lucas, Executive Director of CMCC today released the following statement regarding the release of the report by the Federal Task Force on Legalization: “We applaud the task force for a progressive report that strongly supports a secure, stable medical cannabis system. CMCC welcomes both the explicit recommendation for maintaining a separate medical access framework – which is important to ensuring patient access and safety – and for affirming a commitment to promote and support pre-clinical and clinical research. More research will serve to reinforce messages pertaining to responsible use, and to the use of cannabis in the treatment of a variety of conditions.”

Did You Know?
Did you know that raw cannabis is non-psychoactive? The herb only becomes psychoactive when two things happen. First, when the bud dries and ages. Second, when the cannabis is heated. In order to release the full potential of marijuana’s psychoactive effects, you must first go through a process called decarboxylation.
What is Decarboxylation?
You probably have already heard that the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis is delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is what gets you high when you smoke or vape cannabis or eat an edible. But, you won’t find much THC on a live, growing marijuana plant, if any at all. What you’ll find instead is another compound called THCA, which is short for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid.
THCA is not psychoactive. In order to feel the mind-altering effects of cannabis, you need to transform non-psychoactive THCA into psychoactive THC. In order to do this, you apply heat.
Each time you take a lighter to a joint or place your cannabis in the oven, you are converting one compound into another. You’re turning an otherwise non-psychoactive plant into a psychoactive one. To get technical, you’re removing a “carboxyl group” from the acid form of THC. Hence the term “Decarboxylation”. Without that carboxyl group, THC is able to freely bind to cell receptors in your brain and body

The Basics of Vaporization
Why Use a Vaporizer?
The main reason that people choose to switch to vaporizers is the difference between vapor and smoke. The combustion process that creates smoke involves unpleasant by-products, like carbon monoxide and known carcinogens that are best avoided whenever possible.
There are promising studies that suggest that vaporizers are an effective way to avoid these compounds. While further research needs to be done to support these claims, they make sense given the fact that vaporizers are able to extract desired compounds from your material at temperatures below the point at which combustion begins.
